On some level, the album STRONGER THAN BEFORE (STB) really started with the song REAL ME, even though it was included in the EP release by Chapter 2. At that time, I really wanted to write something original for the group to claim as our own. On hindsight, it was written as an embodiment of what I wanted to say as a songwriter.
For me, songwriting was a vehicle to express what I probably couldn’t say in a normal conversation. It wasn’t about the pursuit of producing a “hit song”. It was an inner voice that wanted to be heard, and as long as there remained things to be said, feelings to be expressed, issues to be tackled – it found an outlet in my songwriting.
A lot of those unexpressed feelings led to the release of STRONGER THAN BEFORE, and it was a joy for me to write the words and the music that sought relief in their expression.
Somehow the GRAMMY process the past month or so has gotten me sidetracked, as I sought validation for the work that went into producing STB, not realizing that I already have all the validation that I need from all those of have purchased the album, who have listened to the songs, and who have found solace in the realization that they were not alone in the feelings that they have felt as echoed by the songs in the album.
Today I got reminded of all that when I listened to REAL ME. As long as there are words to be said and feelings unexpressed, I will find relief and release in the pen to the cadence of a melody or two in my head.
Thus continues my songwriting journey, and I hope you’ll continue to join me on this road, wherever it might lead.
Always In Music,
